Guayaquil has gotten a really bad name. But the city has worked hard to make it safer and is now statistically as safe as Quito. Generally any big city has the potential to be dangerous, so you need to take precautions. Be aware of your surrounding and try not to hang around areas with few people around. Watch for people bumping into you as a pretense to pickpocket. And watch out at ATMs.The downtown area (including Malecon 2000 and Av. 9 de octubre) really caters to tourists and has a visible police presence.

You can have a great time and be safe in Guayaquil.

This city in general is not safe. If you decide to visit Guayaquil go directly to Malecon 2000, this is a modern and the only nice location in the city, don't walk alone around the city. It will be better if you walk with 2 or more friends along with you. You will not find any historical buildings or churches. If this is what you want to see then I'll recommend you to visit Quito or any city in the highlands, they are safer and there's more to see around. If you go out at night go with a group.Don't carry more then your willing to loose
